Laters

Greetings from America, the land where it's ok to eat apple pie for breakfast.

One last post for old times' sake - it seems this blog has uttered its last inane breath - and we're onto pastures new. There's lots of stuff going on at the moment work-wise, some refreshing new ventures that have nothing to do with photography as it happens. Lots to keep my twiddling thumbs busy with. And thankfully both of them are working now; when just a week ago my hand looked like a side of uncooked ham, it now resembles bacon rind. That's better apparently.

I've been assisting on some fashion shoots recently, my girlfriend is doing a bunch of cool photos for a vintage boutique. After we all nearly dropped dead from the heat, it seems things went to plan photography-wise, and the model even turned up on time. It turned a few heads as she wandered down the road dressed as a modded-out version of Wonder Woman, although with the amount of drugs consumed by the average Athenian, it was probably one of the more mundane things they witnessed that day.

I wanted to say thanks to everyone who read this and/or fell asleep in front of it, this blog has been a good way of making sense of all the stuff that's gone down since moving here almost two years ago. I'm still trying to figure this country out - it definitely wins 1st place as the most surreal country I've ever been to, a land of extremes and dichotomies, woven into the fabric of the everyday. As they say: 'Only in America..'

House of pain

Thursday was fun. This past week has been dastardly for many reasons, but it was topped off with me slicing my hand down to the bone on some broken glass - I won't say how it happened because it was so unbelievably stupid of me, but needless to say, I was taught a hearty lesson. After five x-rays, three stitches and a tetanus shot, I was all stitched up, and am now frustratingly one-handed for the next 10 days. Now I know how it must feel to be a Muppet - thumbs can be useful after all.

Explain this image?

Hi all! If you're interested, my website http://www.benmostyn.com/ has had a face lift in tune with some stuff my rep (http://www.wonderfulmachine.com/) has been doing recently.. There's a new gallery from AthFest, as well as a newly revitalised photo essay focusing on 'The Classic' - a nickname for Athens, Georgia - the series is a documentary of the city and the interesting people I've met since moving here.

On a different note entirely, I stumbled across this http://www.explainthisimage.com/ the other day, and nearly soiled myself from laughing so hard. Seriously.

AthFest!

Athens' annual music festival (the aptly-named AthFest) took place this past weekend, and knowing how seriously the Athenians take their music, I was nervous and excited at the prospect. And rightly so, as it turned out. Over 150 bands were playing shows, and thousands of people descended upon the city for a few happy days of beer-fuelled carnage. It was totally insane; a heady swirl of hellish heat, worrying smells, drunken hipsters, and volume levels that could kill.
I had to photograph six shows for the city newspaper, and running around to catch each one (and bust my way to the front) was no mean feat. The Black Lips played the main outdoor stage on Friday night - they put on an amazing performance, and managed to survive the blistering heat, hammering out a set list that ignited a sweaty riot within the crowd. I could go on, but instead here are some pictures taken during the mighty AthFest 2009. Click to enlarge.

Strange lights

Friday was an odd day. Firstly, I saw a parrot outside Starbucks. Didn't seem to belong to anyone, it was just hanging out. Alrighty then.

Next, I had an assignment to shoot a portrait of the lovely Silvia Giraudo for the newspaper.

Then, the Georgia Theatre burnt down. It's a historical landmark, and has hosted some of the biggest names in music. RIP Georgia Theatre.
